The Gambler – Hold, Fold, Walk, or Run

You probably know the song The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. (An excellent karaoke song, in my humble opinion.) There's also some great leadership advice in that song. There are times as a leader you got to:

Know when to hold 'em.

You dig in because you believe in something so strongly. You're willing to challenge colleagues and others because it is the right thing to do.

Know when to fold 'em.

Sometimes, you try to make something happen. Then you can see that reward is not going to be worth it. Good leaders fold as often as they hold.

Know when to walk away.

I love the saying that you don't have to show up to every fight you're invited to. You also don't have to get involved in everything. Every moment of your day is a choice to walk towards or away from something. Making the right choice will determine how successful you are.

Know when to run.

For most leaders, especially those in recovery, this is when you feel your emotions building up. You know you are going to regret it if you continue. Even if you're right.
